WHAT is WHMIS 2015?
WHMIS 2015 incorporates the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS) for Canadian Workplaces. GHS is an international initiative to standardize chemical hazard classification and communication globally. GHS has been adopted by many of Canada's trading partners, including the United States.
WHAT does WHMIS 2015 mean for you?
- WHMIS classifications of hazards will include new hazard classes
- Label requirements will be standardized with signal words and pictograms
- Safety Data Sheets (SDS) will include new information in a 16-section format
- New employee training may be required to get up to speed on new standards
WHEN is WHMIS 2015?
WHMIS 2015 is being rolled out in 3 phases with total completion set for December 1st, 2018.
Stage 1: May 31, 2018
Employers must consult with an Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) regulator
Stage 2: June 1 - August 31, 2018
Manufacturers and Importers must comply with WHMIS 2015 regulations
Stage 3: September 1 - November 30, 2018
Distrubutors must comply with WHMIS 2015 regulations
Completion: December 1, 2018
Employers must comply with WHMIS 2015 regulations
